Department Function:
The County Treasurer is an elected official; duties include tax billing, collection and distribution of local tax money to the state, county, cities and schools. This also includes other taxing entities within the county that levy ad valorem taxes and special assessments and all money belonging to the county and or directed by law to be paid to the County Treasurer.
Another duty of the County Treasurer is to be an agent for the State Department of Revenue and sell titles and tags for motor vehicles. In Sherman County, the County Treasurer's office handles the renewal of state driver’s licenses for the State department. This includes photos and issuance of the Kansas driver’s license and Kansas ID cards. Driver’s license hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday.
Taxes:
Tax Bills are mailed once a year after November 1st. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer from payment responsibilities. Payments can be made in full or in two payments with the first payment due by December 20th and the second payment due by May 10th. After this date interest will accrue. Personal property not paid by December 20th will be due in full and accrue interest.
Payments on real estate tax between December 21st and May 10th, may be paid in half. After May 10th, the full payment of taxes is due plus interest. Real estate taxes which are three (3) years delinquent are eligible for tax sale.
Payment of personal property (trucks, trailers, oil and gas, mobile homes) is due December 20th in half and December 21st full payment is due. If tax is not paid by March 25th a warrant is issued and sent to the Sheriff for collection. If you owe personal property you cannot purchase tags for vehicles.
Protest Tax:
Appeal of taxes is once a year, first or second half on each parcel. Payment must be made at the time of protest. If the first half of the taxes are paid prior to December 20th you will have until that date to return the protest paperwork back to the County Treasurer. Protest forms are available at the County Treasurer's office along with instructions.
All tax roll changes are initiated in the Appraiser’s office. Upon the County Treasurer’s office receiving a change order that has been approved by the County Commissioners, a corrected tax statement is issued. In the case of overpayment, a refund is issued from the County Treasurer’s office providing no tax is due.
